Trusted data resiliency anchors Oracle’s ransomware defense strategy

Trusted data resiliency anchors Oracle’s ransomware defense strategy

For enterprises, data resiliency ultimately comes down to an ability for useful work to continue.

The definition sounds simple, yet making sure that data in critical systems is fully protected and accessible as rapidly as possible is a complicated task. This is the work behind Oracle Corp.’s resilient data architecture, which is driven by a combination of Oracle Exadata, built-in security offered by Oracle AI Database, and deeply ingrained data protection technologies enabled by Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance.

“These days, with the advent of all these vicious ransomware attacks, we not only have to protect the production systems, we also have to protect the backup systems,” said Ashish Ray (pictured), senior vice president of Oracle Database, product management, at Oracle. “This means the backup systems by themselves have to be a different system, different levels of control, different ownerships, different network segregation. All of these have to happen at the same time, plus immutable backups, plus data encryption. All these technologies come together as part of Oracle’s resilient data architecture.”

Ray spoke with Dave Vellante at Oracle’s “AI Cyberattacks Are Escalating: How to Secure Your Data Now” event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Oracle’s resilient data approach helps enterprises recover from attacks. (* Disclosure below.)

Trusted data resiliency

A key element in Oracle’s resilient architecture involves an ability to validate and restore data in its transactional state. Transactional assurances are taken care of at a deep granular level, according to Ray.

“When we talk about resilience, it has to be trusted resilience,” Ray told theCUBE. “It means you have to recover to a known valid transactional state, and that should lead to business outcomes. The beauty of all of these technologies is it can mark the state at a very granular point. You can go back to the granular point without any data loss. That’s what really trusted data resilience is.”

That level of precision also depends on knowing that backed-up data is actually usable when recovery is needed. Oracle’s Recovery Appliance validates backup integrity as data is ingested and continuously checks recoverability, helping identify corruption or missing recovery data before a restore becomes necessary.

“Data that is backed up but cannot be validated is Schrödinger’s data,” Ray said. “The data could be backed up, and you cannot rest on the laurels because the moment when you start trying to restore, recover the data and use it, you may find out that the data cannot be used because maybe there was some underlying validation checks, underlying corruptions that happen, the data could be compromised.”
