Exclusive: Akuity adds Fleet Management to Kargo Enterprise to replace per-cluster pipelines

Exclusive: Akuity adds Fleet Management to Kargo Enterprise to replace per-cluster pipelines

Exclusive: Akuity adds Fleet Management to Kargo Enterprise to replace per-cluster pipelines

Software delivery platform company Akuity Inc. today added Fleet Management to its Kargo Enterprise platform to allow teams to ship one change across hundreds of Kubernetes clusters as a single release.

Akuity is pitching it as a replacement for the per-cluster pipelines those teams maintain now. The new capability goes after a delivery problem that gets worse each time a company adds infrastructure.

Production environments that once meant one cluster or 10 now often run to hundreds, according to Akuity, with artificial intelligence speeding up that growth. Every new cluster adds release risk and slows delivery, the company said.

Kargo Enterprise, which runs on the Akuity Platform, is the commercial edition of Kargo, the open-source promotion project Akuity created. With Fleet Management switched on, teams group their clusters into a fleet and set the rollout order and failure threshold one time.

Kargo then promotes each change through the fleet wave by wave. Every cluster reports its own health along the way, and platform teams watching the rollout can tell how far a release has gotten at any point.

A rollout halts only after the failure rate passes the threshold a team picked at the start, which Akuity said keeps one failed cluster from stopping the whole fleet. Changes reach a pilot group first and canary clusters next before going to the general population. A health check sits between each wave.

A platform team that spots a bad change mid-rollout halts it for the whole fleet, and the rollback that follows reaches every cluster in one step. One view covers the entire fleet in place of a dashboard per cluster. Groups that own only part of the estate get role-based access control limited to the clusters they run.

Akuity expects finished changes to spend less time waiting on release windows and cluster-by-cluster sign-offs. One scenario the company laid out involves a platform team pushing a patch for a known vulnerability in an add-on such as cert-manager. A bad update in that case stops in the first wave, before it reaches the rest of the clusters.

Companies now run fleets of clusters, and the release process “has become what limits how fast they can ship,” Akuity co-founder and Chief Executive Hong Wang said. Teams that hold off on making fleet management a first-class capability “will feel the gap on every release,” he added.

Stephanie Walter, practice leader for the AI stack at HyperFRAME Research LLC, said partial failure is a real challenge once a release spans hundreds of clusters. Platform teams need to tell an isolated cluster problem apart from a bad change that should stop the rollout, she said. With AI accelerating development, she added, “more code should not mean more release plumbing.”

Akuity is a venture capital-backed startup that the creators of Argo CD founded in 2021, and Lead Edge Capital led its $20 million Series A round in 2022. The Fleet Management news follows last month’s launch of Agentic Control Plane, which gave AI agents a governed path into production.

Fleet Management is in private beta, with no date given for general availability.
