Motive Technologies revs up new AI Agents to automate fleet management

Motive Technologies Inc. is pushing the needle for fleet management automation with the launch of a new artificial intelligence offering called Agents today.

As the name strongly hints at, Motive’s Agents are autonomous AI agents designed to take a more proactive approach to fleet operations by anticipating problems before they occur and taking action to prevent them, without constant human supervision.

San Francisco-based Motive is the developer of a comprehensive fleet management software platform for trucking companies. Its platform comes with multiple sensors that can be installed into individual vehicles, so the system can track their location, fuel levels and other data, such as the temperature of refrigerated loads – basically anything that might be useful to monitor. Those sensors send all that data back to the company’s cloud-based platform, providing tons of useful information for managers trying to keep their fleets organized.

Motive has long excelled at tracking and monitoring fleets, and says now is the time to move beyond just passive monitoring and start taking action where possible. It’s turning to AI to do that.

Fleet operations teams have unparalleled visibility into their fleets thanks to Motive’s platform, but many struggle to take action on the insights it provides quickly enough. That’s because, while data can provide those teams with warnings, it’s still up to humans to do everything else, such as chasing down and investigating alerts, calling drivers individually and verifying any fixes manually.

This problem was made clear in Motive’s recently published 2026 ROI Report, which found that 42% of its customers cite operational inefficiencies relating to administrative work as a major problem. The lag in response time can be very expensive, with Motive estimating that fleet operators lose about $46 billion annually due to issues that could, and should be prevented, such as unplanned vehicle downtime, unproductive engine idling and compliance violations.

That’s why Motive believes its new Agents can save customers an awful lot of money. The Agents are designed to do more than just flag specific problems and notify a human manager to solve them. According to Motive Chief Product Officer Hemant Banavar, they can actually predict problems will happen before they arise, and take action autonomously to ensure they don’t.

“Our customers don’t need another alert,” Banavar explained. “They need action. The data that prevents collisions and breakdowns already lives in Motive. Agents put that data to work the moment it matters, so teams can grow without adding headcount.”

Agents take action

Banavar said Motive’s existing customers will be able to deploy Agents in minutes by following a guided workflow and ready-to-use templates it has created. Once they’re set up, they’ll be able to resolve issues regarding compliance, maintenance and safety without any human involvement.

For example, if one of the Agents detects early signs of driver fatigue, it will alert Atlas, the company’s in-vehicle assistant. It will then speak to the driver and tell them it’s time to take a break, and even direct them to the nearest place where they can safely park the vehicle and rest.

That’s not all the Agents can do. They can also warn drivers of severe weather conditions before they occur. With regard to maintenance, they actively monitor each vehicle and when they spot signs of wear and tear, they can automatically create a work order and mark the vehicle as being out of service while it’s being repaired. In every case, customers will be able to specify the exact conditions that would trigger a maintenance order.

Motive’s Agents can also help fleets to save on money that’s wasted to engine idling, which burns through fuel and wears down engines over time. The company will flag excessive idling when it occurs and prompt the driver through AI Dashcam Plus to shut the engine down. It takes into account ambient temperature conditions too, so drivers who are purposely idling the engine to keep the air conditioner or heater running won’t be penalized for doing so.

Existing customers can access and deploy the Agents starting from today, and this is just the start, Banavar said. The company is planning to bring much greater autonomy to fleet operators in future. Early next year, it will enhance Agents with a new feature that allows teams to create their own Agents simply by describing the task they need them to do.

Ultimately, Motive wants to take automation to such an extreme that a fleet operator can simply tell it what their specific business objectives are, Banavar said. When customers set a simple goal, such as “more on-time deliveries” or “fewer collisions,” the Agents will determine the best way to achieve that objective and issue the necessary instructions to get it done.
