Product Overview

Biographicon was a wiki-based website on which users could create and edit biographical entries for both famous and ordinary people, with no notability threshold for inclusion. It launched on March 1, 2008, seeded with approximately 100,000 biographies imported from Wikipedia, and ran at biographicon.com.

Beyond plain biographies, the site let users add photos and create relational links between profiled individuals, such as family ties or collaborations, and provided per-page discussion pages for resolving disputes. Sensitive personal details like addresses were prohibited to protect privacy.

Competitive Advantages

Biographicon's main advantage was its inclusionist stance: unlike Wikipedia, it imposed no notability threshold, so anyone could be profiled. This positioned it as a dedicated home for the biographies of ordinary people that Wikipedia's deletionist policies excluded.

The site also differentiated itself with relational links between profiled individuals, mapping how people met or were connected, and it seeded the platform with about 100,000 biographies imported from Wikipedia so it launched with substantial content rather than an empty wiki.

Competitive Disadvantages

Biographicon's fully open, anonymous editing model left it vulnerable to spam, edit wars, and inaccurate or malicious entries. Its moderation guidelines were simplistic, summed up as urging contributors to be good and write true things, which proved insufficient to curb low-quality or harmful content.

The platform also lacked advanced social features such as messaging or friending, and it competed for attention against established social networks like Facebook and MySpace. With no viable monetization strategy, it relied on a small amount of Y Combinator seed funding that could not sustain operations, contributing to its shutdown in August 2008.
