Borobotics develops an autonomous drilling robot, Grabowski, that bores holes for ground-source heat pumps where conventional drilling rigs cannot operate. The worm-like machine integrates its drilling equipment inside the borehole, runs on electricity from a standard socket, and seals itself shut when its sensors meet water or gas pockets.

Unlike diesel-powered rigs that need ten tonnes of equipment and large staging areas, the compact robot fits six to eight square metres, so it can drill in small gardens, parking garages, and basements. The ZHAW spin-off sells drilled metres to heat-pump installers and drilling companies, targeting the shallow geothermal market rather than utility-scale deep drilling.
