Cloudflare acquires Deno, the startup behind the Deno programming runtime, to improve its Workers programming model and platform for building and running software on Cloudflare’s network. Deno, co-founded by Bert Belder and Ryan Dahl, recently launched celld, an open source implementation of Workers; Cloudflare principal engineer Kenton Varda says the company sees openness and an escape hatch as good business. Dahl says the team aims to make the Workers programming model mainstream for building servers. The acquisition’s terms are undisclosed, and Deno has raised $26 million, including a Series A led by Sequoia.
