Cloudify Manager - Research Notes

  • Cloudify Manager's distinguishing characteristic is its vendor-neutral blueprint model: an application is described once in TOSCA and then deployed across public clouds, private clouds, and on-premises infrastructure through the same control plane.

    The manager coordinates existing tooling rather than replacing it, orchestrating infrastructure-as-code and configuration-management domains such as Terraform and Ansible while managing Kubernetes clusters alongside traditional workloads. Multi-tenancy and role-based access control let platform teams expose that control plane to multiple business units with scoped permissions.

  • Cloudify Manager originated as the management server of the Cloudify open-source project, which spun out of GigaSpaces Technologies to become a standalone multi-cloud orchestration platform.

    Dell Technologies acquired Cloudify in January 2023 and folded the orchestration platform into its infrastructure portfolio, while the open-source manager and its documentation continued to be published. The manager remains the control point through which Cloudify deployments are modelled, installed, and operated.

  • Cloudify Manager is distributed as an open-source community edition and as separately licensed premium editions. The community edition is published as a self-hosted all-in-one deployment, while premium editions add supported enterprise deployment options obtained from the vendor.

    Because the manager is self-hosted software rather than a metered service, its cost profile consists of licensing and the infrastructure it runs on. That cost scales with the number of managed environments and the level of vendor support an organization chooses, not with orchestration volume.

  • Cloudify Manager is the runtime environment of the Cloudify orchestration platform. It stores an organization's blueprints and deployments, executes install, heal, and scale workflows, and manages the agents that run on application hosts.

    Operators reach the manager through the Cloudify Management Console, a command-line interface, or a REST API. It runs on an open-source stack that includes PostgreSQL, NGINX, and RabbitMQ, and coordinates infrastructure and configuration domains through plugins such as AWS CloudFormation, Azure ARM, Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes.
