Educents is an online marketplace that connects educators and families with affordable educational resources.
Educents was an online marketplace, sometimes described as an Etsy for education, that connected parents, teachers, and homeschooling families with independent sellers of discounted educational materials. The catalog spanned worksheets, lesson plans, digital apps, toys, and hands-on kits across subjects, grade levels, and learning styles, with more than 5,000 distinct products at its peak.
The platform earned revenue transactionally through sales on its site and gave independent creators a storefront to reach a concentrated audience of education buyers. It began as a daily-deals site in 2013 and evolved into a year-round marketplace before rebranding to Colearn Academy, a virtual K-12 school, around 2020.
Educents aggregated discounted educational materials from thousands of independent creators, small publishers, and edtech companies onto a single marketplace, giving parents, teachers, and homeschoolers one place to discover products across subjects and grade levels. The platform negotiated deals of up to 90 percent off and reported saving educators more than $26 million while serving over 500,000 families, teachers, and homeschoolers across 73 countries.
Its seller base was overwhelmingly women, and the marketplace let independent educators build storefronts and reach a large, targeted audience of buyers, which gave small creators distribution they would struggle to build alone. The Imagine K12 and Y Combinator backing also lent the early company credibility and access to the education startup ecosystem.
Educents operated a deals-and-marketplace model in a crowded education content space, competing with larger, better-funded marketplaces like Teachers Pay Teachers that already had deep seller and buyer networks. The company faced two rounds of layoffs and reported hacking and harassment incidents, signaling operational and capital pressure as it scaled.
The rebrand to Colearn Academy around 2020 and the eventual repurposing of the educents.com domain indicate the original marketplace model did not sustain as a standalone business, and the brand lost its independent external presence after the transition to a virtual school.
