Element Zero converts iron ore and other metal ores into high-purity metals using renewable electricity.
Element Zero's core offering is a patented low-temperature electroreduction process that dissolves metal ores in a custom molten electrolyte and converts them into high-purity metal using renewable electricity, operating at roughly 250-300 degrees C rather than the extreme temperatures of conventional ironmaking.
The initial commercial product line is green iron, produced at a continuous high-purity iron plant in Perth and demonstrated with larger modules backed by ARENA funding. The same platform has been tested on other metals and minerals including nickel, titanium, tin, and silicon, with the company also identifying recovered mineral components such as green cement precursors as by-products.
Iron and steel production accounts for a large share of global industrial emissions, and demand for these materials is projected to keep rising through 2050, which underpins the market case for zero-carbon ironmaking. Playground Global framed the investment around converting the full spectrum of traded iron ores, including the roughly 95 percent of Australian and Brazilian exports that lower-carbon alternatives cannot currently process.
Government support is a material demand-side catalyst: Australia's Future Made in Australia agenda funded a A$53.65 million demonstration project through ARENA in September 2026, and the company's longer-term plan targets modular commercial-scale production in the Pilbara near the world's largest iron ore export infrastructure.
Element Zero's differentiator is a non-aqueous molten-salt electroreduction route that runs at moderate temperatures, so it can process lower-grade iron ores that hydrogen direct-reduction and blast-furnace routes cannot, and it can follow intermittent wind and solar power rather than requiring baseload energy. The company reports roughly 30-40 percent lower energy use per tonne than coal- or gas-based methods and iron output around 98 percent purity, with a membrane-free, closed-loop electrolyte design.
Competing green-iron developers such as Calix, GravitHy, and Blastr Green Steel pursue hydrogen or electrolysis-based routes, and LinkedIn surfaces SP Energy and Fortescue as adjacent Western Australian clean-energy and iron-ore players. Element Zero's board seat held by Playground Global's co-founder reflects its positioning within a US deep-tech investor thesis on decarbonizing hard-to-abate industry.
