
Ideon Technologies maps underground mineral deposits using cosmic-ray muon tomography.
The REVEAL Subsurface Intelligence Platform is Ideon's commercial offering. It combines proprietary muon detectors, imaging systems, inversion software, and artificial intelligence to turn naturally occurring cosmic-ray muons into three-dimensional density maps of volumes up to roughly one kilometre underground.
The platform is deployed from surface installations or down industry-standard boreholes and supports exploration targeting, resource definition, geotechnical characterization, and cave monitoring. Ideon also offers service engagements in which its team runs a survey and delivers interpreted results to the operator's geology group.
Global demand for critical minerals is outpacing supply as electrification, battery manufacturing, and renewable-energy deployment accelerate. Mining companies are being pushed to find and develop deposits faster while reducing exploration footprints and capital risk. Subsurface imaging technologies that reduce reliance on expensive drilling are positioned to become standard inputs to resource decisions.
Ideon's muon-tomography approach addresses this by offering continuous, large-volume density mapping that can validate or refine targets before and between drill campaigns. As near-surface deposits are depleted and miners go deeper, non-invasive geophysical solutions are likely to attract more investment and adoption across the mining value chain.
Ideon's differentiation rests on a passive imaging method that needs no active radiation source, so a survey can cover a large volume continuously between drill holes rather than at discrete points. Its detectors were miniaturized roughly fifty times from the first prototypes, and a borehole-compatible detector was deployed at the McClean Lake mine in 2021.
Field results with mining operators including Nyrstar, Teck, Orano, BHP, Rio Tinto, Vale, Fireweed Metals, and Evolution Mining give the company operational evidence that newer entrants lack. Recognition such as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer designation and Deloitte Technology Fast 50 placements supports its position in Canadian mining technology.
Muon tomography requires long accumulation times to reach useful resolution, so survey turnaround can lag the pace of exploration decision-making, and results depend on access geometry such as drill holes or underground workings. Conventional geophysics and drilling remain cheaper for shallow or small-scale targets.
Ideon is addressing resolution and speed with funded work on active-source muon imaging, including a Berkeley Lab-led ARPA-E project and an international consortium experiment using a compact laser-plasma accelerator. Commercial reach also depends on mining companies adopting a measurement method that competes with established exploration workflows.
