International Battery designed and manufactured large-format, rechargeable lithium-ion cells and battery packs at its plant in Upper Macungie Township, Pennsylvania. Its products served military contractors as well as electric and hybrid vehicle makers, and the company moved to the Lehigh Valley from Oakland, New Jersey, in 2008.

The company ceased operations in early March 2012, citing an inability to turn a profit in an extraordinarily challenging market. Its sudden shutdown left its employees without work, and International Battery said it would sell its assets and technology to pay creditors.
