Product Overview

Muun ships a self-custodial mobile wallet for bitcoin and lightning with one balance for on-chain and off-chain payments. The wallet runs a two-of-two multisignature model with an Emergency Kit holding both keys while the phone holds one, plus a mempool-based fee estimator.

The apps run on Android and iOS with recovery paths including a cold recovery code and multi-factor authentication, and the codebase moved to an MIT open-source model with auditable native builds.

Competitive Advantages

Muun combines on-chain and lightning payments in a single self-custodial balance, removing channel setup and split balances for mainstream users. Its two-of-two multisignature design keeps one key off the phone, so a hacked or stolen device alone cannot move funds.

The wallet pairs this with a mempool-based fee estimator, an Emergency Kit with keys and output descriptors, and fully open-source MIT-licensed apps that third parties can audit and reproduce.

Competitive Disadvantages

Muun relies on its own swap and fee-estimation infrastructure, so users absorb on-chain costs when mempools congest, as seen during the 2023 fee surge. Its two-key model also adds recovery complexity compared with single-key wallets that use seed phrases.

The company publishes no current headcount beyond its 2019 team size and discloses little about revenue, leaving its operating scale and monetization harder to verify than larger venture-backed wallet providers.
