Competitive Advantages
Jbed's embedded compilation engine translated Java bytecode directly into the host microprocessor's native instructions, letting mass-market handsets run Java software within tight limits on memory, processing, and energy. Device makers licensed it as an in-device runtime that let operators and content providers reach a broad base of handsets without changing device hardware.
Esmertec also carried an operator-facing side that device-software rivals generally lacked. Its Cellicium USSD services reached subscribers on any handset, including legacy phones and SIM cards, giving the company a second revenue base beyond handset licenses and a customer relationship with mobile network operators rather than device vendors alone.

Competitive Disadvantages
Esmertec's licensing business depended on handset and device makers shipping Java-enabled models on schedule, and its volumes were exposed to the slower segments of the mobile device market. Rival in-device Java engines competed for the same design wins at those manufacturers.
The company also faced the shift of handset software toward higher-level platforms including Android, where an in-device Java virtual machine was less central. That pressure, combined with the cost of competing in a consolidating mobile software market, preceded the combination with Purple Labs under the Myriad Group name.

Product Overview
Esmertec's product portfolio centred on Jbed, an embedded Java virtual machine licensed to device manufacturers, and on mobile services platforms sold to telecom operators. Jbed Advanced CLDC gave mobile phones a Java ME runtime, while Jbed Advanced CDC extended Java execution to set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, automotive entertainment systems, and personal digital assistants.
For operators, the Cellicium USSD browsing platform and the MAX Mobile Application eXplorer delivered menu-based data services that reached subscribers on any handset, including legacy phones. The company also offered customized mobile solution development alongside its packaged engines and platforms.
