LightBlue is Punch Through's free Bluetooth Low Energy scanning, debugging, and virtual-peripheral app for iOS, macOS, and Android developers.
LightBlue's principal advantage is its depth as a free tool: it combines peripheral scanning, characteristic inspection with Hex, Octal, Binary, and Decimal data entry, virtual peripheral emulation, and no-code cloud streaming in a single app, where comparable utilities cover only part of that workflow.
It is frequently named alongside Nordic Semiconductor's nRF Connect in BLE tutorials, academic papers, and developer guides as one of the standard exploration tools, giving it broad community familiarity and an installed base in the millions.
LightBlue began in 2012 as an internal tool that Punch Through built to test and debug Bluetooth Low Energy devices while working on client projects. Because it worked well, the firm shared it with the developer community and has kept it free ever since.
The tool spread organically to thousands of engineers and is now used across industries, from solo developers to engineering teams at major device companies. Punch Through continues to ship regular updates, with version 5.5.1 released in September 2026 adding dark mode support and iOS 27 compatibility.
LightBlue is distributed free of charge on the Apple App Store, Mac App Store, and Google Play, with no premium tier or in-app advertisements. Punch Through is explicit that it is not building an app business around the tool.
The app instead demonstrates the firm's Bluetooth Low Energy engineering expertise and keeps the firm visible to the embedded and mobile developers who become its clients for connected-product design engagements.
LightBlue is a free Bluetooth Low Energy debugging and development toolkit for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and Android, published by Punch Through Design. The app scans for nearby BLE peripherals, sorts them by signal strength, and exposes each device's advertisement data, services, and characteristics for reading, writing, and notification subscription.
It also emulates BLE peripherals through virtual device profiles for prototyping and streams BLE data to AWS IoT or Adafruit IO through its Cloud Connect feature. Punch Through reports more than 2.5 million downloads across iOS and Android and over 120,000 monthly active users.
