The McClatchy Company is an American local-news publisher founded in Sacramento, California, in 1857 by James McClatchy around The Sacramento Bee. The company grew over successive generations of the McClatchy family into a chain of newspapers and went public in 1988 to reduce debt while the family retained control.

In 2006 McClatchy acquired Knight Ridder, then the second-largest US daily-newspaper chain, in a $4.5 billion deal that expanded its footprint to roughly 30 daily newspapers. After a 2020 Chapter 11 filing, McClatchy emerged under the ownership of Chatham Asset Management, which completed its acquisition of substantially all of the company's assets on September 4, 2020; the business retained The McClatchy Company name and remains privately held.
