The National Security Agency is a U.S. combat support agency and a member of the Intelligence Community. It collects and analyzes signals intelligence for national policymakers and the military, while defending U.S. government networks against foreign cyber threats.
Under the NSA/CSS dual designation, it pairs cryptologic intelligence with a dedicated Cybersecurity Directorate, distinct from the CIA's human-intelligence focus and from civilian cyber agencies such as CISA. It serves as the federal government's lead authority for cryptology and network defense, setting technical standards that private vendors and allied agencies adopt.
