Iowa Public Radio's mission is to connect Iowans to news, music, information and ideas that shape their world every day. The organization values integrity, curiosity, belonging, respect and innovation, and it strives to reflect Iowa's cultural complexity in its coverage and workforce.
Looking forward, IPR's strategic plan emphasizes building an audience-centric culture, delivering content Iowans need, reaching younger and more diverse audiences, and pursuing smart partnerships. The Sounding Board community advisory board, established in 2023, helps ensure the network serves the educational and cultural needs of all Iowans.
Iowa Public Radio operates a statewide public radio network organized around three programming streams: IPR News, IPR Classical and IPR Studio One. The network delivers news, classical music and alternative music programming over broadcast stations, live streams, a website, podcasts, newsletters and mobile apps.
The service is free to listeners and funded entirely by donations from listeners, businesses and organizations across Iowa. With 27 stations covering the state, IPR provides local news and cultural programming to Iowans wherever they are.
IPR's statewide broadcast footprint and community-based nonprofit structure distinguish it from commercial and national outlets. As an independent nonprofit advised by a volunteer board, the network focuses on Iowa-specific news, music and culture rather than national syndication.
Its listener-funded model creates direct accountability to the communities it serves. Recent fundraising success, including an $8 million campaign launched after independence, has enabled investments in journalism excellence, technology upgrades and partnerships for investigative reporting.
