Astrobotic operates the world's largest private facility dedicated to lunar logistics, a 47,000-square-foot complex housing its lander, rover, and mission-control lines on-site, which compresses build and test cycles that competitors split across vendors. Its portfolio spans over 60 NASA, DoD, and commercial contracts valued at more than $600 million, covering lunar landers, rovers, surface power infrastructure, and spacecraft navigation with machine-learning hazard detection.
The 2022 acquisition of Masten Space Systems added reusable vertical-takeoff-and-landing expertise and propulsion test infrastructure, giving Astrobotic end-to-end capability from suborbital test flights to lunar delivery. Its Griffin lander was selected for NASA's Moon Base 2 mission, positioning Astrobotic as a central provider in the agency's planned permanent lunar outpost.
Astrobotic's inaugural Peregrine Mission One lander suffered a propulsion malfunction hours after its January 2024 launch, ruling out a lunar landing and limiting the mission to a cislunar flyby, which underscored the technical risk of first-generation commercial lunar delivery. As a bootstrapped, largely venture-light company, Astrobotic had relied on customer contracts rather than large outside investment, constraining how fast it could scale independently.
The company faces entrenched competition from larger, publicly traded CLPS providers such as Intuitive Machines and Firefly Aerospace, which reached the lunar surface first and operate with deeper capital reserves. These structural disadvantages drove Astrobotic's 2026 agreement to be acquired by Voyager Technologies in order to access public-market capital and scale for NASA's Moon Base program.
