Colossal is a breakthrough bioscience and genetic engineering company that builds radical new technologies to advance the field of genomics.
Alta Charo, J.D. is the Knowles Professor Emerita of Law & Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Andrew Phipps is a photographer, cinematographer, fine art printer, picture framer, and neuroscience research fellow.
Professor Carolyn Bertozzi’s research spans chemistry and biology, with an emphasis on studies of the cell surface.
Dr. Michael Kreger is a wildlife conservation consultant, certified paleontology interpreter, and educator with more than 30 years of leadership experience.
Colossal says it will be the first company to use CRISPR technology successfully for the de-extinction of lost species.
The company is advancing de-extinction by seeking to resurrect the Woolly Mammoth through gene editing.
Colossal Biosciences introduces GenoMorph, an AI platform that identifies candidate genetic edits for de-extinction projects with limited genome data. Using developmental data from chickens, quail, ducks, and pigeons alongside genetic information and 3D skull measurements from more than 70 bird species, the platform has identified about 2,300 targets for dodo facial morphology. The company also reports a Nicobar pigeon colony of 36 birds and cells that develop into eggs and sperm.

Colossal Biosciences is using genetic engineering to pursue the return of extinct species, including dire wolves and woolly mammoths. CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm says the work also advances genome engineering and developmental biology, with potential applications in conservation, gene therapies, and genetic disease research. In July, the company announced a $200 million Series C led by TWG Global, valuing it at $10.2 billion.

Colossal Biosciences is reportedly discussing a new funding round at a $20 billion to $30 billion valuation, up from its $10.2 billion valuation roughly 16 months earlier. The five-year-old de-extinction startup has started generating revenue, though the round’s size and lead investor are unknown. Its work includes conservation technology, three spun-out startups, a sixth de-extinction target species, and Tasmanian devil cancer research through its nonprofit arm.

Colossal Labs founder Ben Lamm says the company will release a bio-acoustic project mapping different types of dire wolf howls later this year. He says the first two wolves, Romulus and Remus, began howling at three weeks old in response to human singing and owl sounds, and are now around six months old. The company is also exploring AI to monitor wolf behavior and identify emotional patterns and vocalizations.
