Unknown attackers compromised internet-connected refrigeration controllers at an estimated 700 French supermarkets, causing fridges to overheat, food to spoil, and some electrical systems to catch fire. The affected Danfoss, Dixell, and Copeland controller models had critical vulnerabilities, and stores reportedly left devices exposed to the internet and running outdated firmware. Copeland says it is working with customers to prevent similar incidents; the attackers’ motive remains unknown.
