Competitive Advantages

ECO pairs an editorial statute that commits it to serve readers rather than any outside power with a mobile-first publishing platform and a shareholder base deliberately spread across many investors so no single owner controls the title. It publishes its own apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android rather than depending only on third-party distribution.

The title spreads its journalism across ten specialist brands, letting one newsroom serve a legal audience through Advocatus, insurance through ECOseguros and climate through Capital Verde. It declines public subsidies, and its events arm, including the Fabrica 2030 conference, turns the same readership into sponsored and ticketed revenue alongside subscriptions and advertising.

Competitive Disadvantages

ECO competes for the same Portuguese business readership as Jornal de Negocios, Expresso, Observador, Jornal Economico and Publico, established titles with larger newsrooms and broader brand recognition. It forgoes public subsidies, so subscriptions and advertising alone must fund a newsroom of more than twenty-five journalists spread across ten brands.

Portugal's small domestic market limits how far a business-news subscription base can grow, and the free digital news that advertising underwrites sits with a handful of very large technology platforms. That combination leaves an independent title competing for a limited pool of both readers and advertisers.

Customer Acquisition

ECO Premium is sold largely self-serve: readers subscribe for 55 euros a year or 5 euros a month and get immediate access, while larger accounts go through a proposal-request form for corporate plans. A dedicated commercial structure handles branded and corporate content through named areas for northern sales, accounts, and branded and corporate content.

ECO reaches its audience directly through its own channels rather than paid campaigns, with a LinkedIn following of more than 138,000. Paid plans are bought through the premium page, or through the corporate proposal form for organisations.

Pricing Strategy

ECO Premium is priced at 55 euros a year or 5 euros a month, giving subscribers all premium articles, subscriber-only newsletters, use of up to three devices and the ability to gift up to three articles a month. ECO Premium Corporate targets organisations with five or more employees and is quoted at 25 euros per unit on the 50-plus plan.

Corporate pricing stays quote-based rather than listed at full scale, with buyers routed through a proposal form so larger contracts are negotiated rather than sold at a fixed shelf price. Advertising and branded corporate content run alongside the subscription tiers as separate revenue lines.
