Form Energy’s first commercial product is a grid-scale iron-air battery system designed to store and discharge energy for up to 100 hours. The battery operates through reversible rusting using iron, air, and a water-based, non-flammable electrolyte.
The company also develops Formware, a grid investment and operations model that analyzes multi-year hourly data and weather variability. Its battery modules are grouped into container-sized enclosures and modular megawatt-scale power blocks for utility deployment.
Form Energy reports that grid-planning studies performed with utility partners indicate that meeting its cost and performance targets could unlock tens of gigawatts of United States demand for multi-day storage over the next decade. The company says deployment at that scale could produce billions of dollars in consumer savings.
Form positions multi-day storage for prolonged grid-stress events, clean firm power, transmission optimization, and balancing new industrial and data-center loads. Those applications define its stated market opportunity, while actual adoption depends on achieving the cited targets and completing utility deployments.
Form Energy states that its iron-air system can store energy at less than one-tenth the cost of lithium-ion battery technology. It uses iron, water, and air, has no thermal-runaway risk, avoids heavy metals, and is designed to be highly recyclable.
The system delivers 100-hour duration in modular power blocks that do not depend on particular geology. Form says abundant inputs support global scaling, while pairing iron-air storage with lithium-ion batteries and generation resources can reduce system cost and improve year-round reliability.
