Research Notes
The KUKA LBR iisy competes directly with other established cobot families, including ABB GoFa, FANUC CRX-10iA, Universal Robots e-Series, and AUBO-i Series, each of which targets the same flexible-manufacturing and shared-workspace duties. The LBR iisy differentiates through its integration with KUKA's own robot controller and software platform.
Because it belongs to a vendor with a broad industrial robot line, buyers can standardise on KUKA controllers and tooling across both cobot and industrial robot deployments rather than running a separate cobot ecosystem.
The collaborative robot category is crowded and price-competitive, and several rivals reached the market earlier with larger installed bases and wider third-party end-effector ecosystems. Against those rivals the LBR iisy is one option among many rather than the default choice.
A buyer already standardised on another cobot platform faces switching costs in programming, tooling, and operator training. The offering's appeal is therefore strongest where KUKA equipment is already in place.
KUKA introduced the LBR iisy alongside its iiQKA robot operating system, announcing the cobot in April 2021 as a sensitive robot for that platform. KUKA subsequently extended the family, and by 2022 was presenting additional iisy models.
The product has since moved onto the iiQKA.OS2 platform, which KUKA covered in a July 2026 press announcement describing the cobot as scalable across collaborative and industrial duties.
The KUKA LBR iisy is an industrial collaborative robot from KUKA, positioned for flexible manufacturing where a robotic arm and human operators share the same workspace. KUKA's own product page describes it for assembly, material handling, and arc welding duties.
The arm is sold as part of KUKA's robot systems portfolio and is normally deployed with a KUKA robot controller, end effector, and application engineering. Manufacturers and system integrators integrate it into production cells and lines.
