LabKeyLabKey SDMS

LabKey SDMS is positioned to support research groups that combine heterogeneous scientific data, assay results, sample records, and clinical information. Its product page describes customizable study and assay models, automated capture and alignment, built-in reporting, and integrations with external analytical tools. The platform also links sample lifecycle activity to study and assay information.

The service combines access controls, audit logging, authentication choices, and API extensions with cloud deployment and an on-premises option. The product page presents these capabilities for scientific collaboration and regulated research workflows, including use cases that require controlled access and traceable records.

LabKey grew from research informatics work and has developed scientific data tools with input from laboratory teams. The company's public history refers to work with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academic, and government research organizations beginning in 2003. Its earlier CPAS platform was publicly shipping by 2005, and an official announcement in 2007 referred to the software as LabKey / CPAS.

LabKey's product portfolio expanded from proteomics and scientific data management into a broader set of laboratory software, including SDMS, LIMS, sample management, electronic data capture, and related research workflows. The company continues to publish versioned product updates; its 2026 release notes separately describe current SDMS features and changes.

Laboratory software increasingly connects sample management, assay workflows, scientific data repositories, and reporting so research teams can work with consistent records across studies. SDMS tools sit alongside LIMS, electronic lab notebooks, and analytical systems, with buyers weighing integration needs, data access, infrastructure, validation, and support.

LabKey markets SDMS to academic, government, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology research organizations, and publishes both cloud and on-premises deployment options.

LabKey's July 21, 2026 release page identifies version 26.7 and lists three SDMS changes: a LabKey MCP Server for desktop AI agents to query and analyze server data, create SQL queries and scripts, and perform actions; a Calculated Column Expression Assistant that generates LabKey SQL expressions from plain-language descriptions; and Microsoft Graph Protocol API support for sending Exchange Online email without SMTP authentication. The same release also notes Community Edition API-key role restrictions, a documentation MCP connection, and built-in resource queries.

These features are tied to release 26.7 and are product-history details, not timeless product claims. The release page links full version notes for the July 2026 update; confirm the applicable edition and deployment before relying on a specific feature. No benchmark ranking or comparative performance claim is reported by this source.

The public Server SDMS page lists a free Community edition, Starter at $310 per user per month, and Professional at $446 per user per month. The page notes that the displayed paid-plan prices assume ten users and annual billing, with volume discounts available. Enterprise terms are available by contacting LabKey.

The same page says on-premises hosting is available at additional cost. It presents different feature sets across the tiers, including data management, assay handling, system integrations, cloud hosting, security and compliance, developer tools, training, and support. Pricing and included functionality are versioned web-page details and may change; this note reflects the page fetched on September 26, 2026.

LabKey Server SDMS is configurable scientific data management software for research organizations working with assay, sample, clinical, and instrument data. It provides tools to capture and align disparate datasets, then analyze them through built-in reporting and visualization or integrations such as Tableau, R, Spotfire, and SQL. Researchers can model study designs and assay types, automate imports, and use API-based extensions to connect the platform with laboratory systems.

Sample workflows track receipt, aliquoting, storage, and shipment alongside assay and study data. Role-based permissions, authentication options, and audit logging support controlled collaboration and regulated use, while editions include a free Community option and paid plans with cloud hosting and an on-premises option.
