Lumoid operated as a try-before-you-buy service that rented consumer electronics, including cameras, drones, and fitness trackers. The startup graduated from the Y Combinator Summer 2013 batch and built a small team serving thousands of customers.

In spring 2017 Lumoid partnered with Best Buy to supply open-box gadget rentals, but it could not secure the funds needed to scale. The company wound down over four months, sold its assets and intellectual property, and founder Aarthi Ramamurthy announced the closure in December 2017.
