2021Medusa sells an open-source commerce platform that developers extend with custom modules, workflows, and APIs.
Open-source adoption is the top of the funnel, drawing tens of thousands of GitHub stars and projects started. The Medusa Experts partner directory matches buyers to firms that build, migrate, and guide commerce projects, covering more than forty named cases.
Open-source starters, both core-team B2C and B2B starters and partner-built ones, let teams launch in minutes and feed Cloud signup. Self-serve Cloud signup starts free with in-dashboard upgrades, while Enterprise and migration work routes to a sales conversation or a Medusa Expert partner.
Developer documentation and the Discord community carry product support. Published customer stories, such as the Healthletic migration off Shopify Plus, show the partner-and-content channel converting.

Several funded headless commerce platforms compete for the same developer and enterprise buyers alongside the incumbent suites.
Open-source availability collapses the cost of entering the commerce-platform market, and venture funding repeatedly puts new headless platforms on the field.
Buyers can instead run a hosted SaaS suite or build an in-house platform on a headless framework.
Strengths rest on a 0.0% GMV platform fee on every tier with unlimited orders and products, and on running the most-starred open-source headless commerce engine ahead of Saleor and Vendure. Enterprise deployments include Redington, Heineken, Eight Sleep and Mitsubishi Motors. The platform takes an agentic-commerce position with MCP, a development agent and an agent harness.
Production deployments depend on PostgreSQL, S3, Redis and global CDN capacity, which the Cloud offering auto-configures and self-hosters must assemble.
Switching is cheap by design, with no lock-in, data exportable to self-hosting at any time and no GMV fee, so buyers hold real leverage.

Weaknesses begin with self-hosted production: it requires a Node.js engineering team, with hosting and scaling handled in-house unless the customer pays for Medusa Cloud. Some enterprise capabilities such as SSO sit under a separate commercial licence. The largest GMV deployments are less typical for the platform.
Opportunities lie in a headless commerce market forecast to grow from $1.7B in 2023 at about 22.5% CAGR toward $13.2B by 2035, with most non-adopters planning headless within two years. Migrations off incumbent suites are a live revenue path, as when a brand paying $25,000 per month in Shopify Plus platform and transaction fees moved to Medusa.
Threats come from Shopify and Adobe Commerce, which hold the default enterprise position, and from funded headless peers competing for the same buyers. Incumbent suites retain a wider add-on ecosystem and specialised agency support.
