Research Notes
Meta AI is accessible inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram rather than relying solely on a separate assistant website or app. That placement lets a user invoke the assistant within a conversation and use image generation without leaving the messaging context.
The standalone app and web experience provide additional access, while the app also serves as a companion for Meta's AI glasses. These connected surfaces give Meta more ways to offer voice and text interactions than a standalone-only assistant.
The standalone app's Discover feed creates a visibility decision that a conventional private assistant chat need not present. Meta says nothing appears on the feed unless a user chooses to post, but the sharing feature adds a step whose consequences users must understand.
TechCrunch reported finding sensitive conversations published to the feed and questioned whether some users recognized that their posts were public.
Meta introduced Meta AI in beta in September 2023 within WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. The initial announcement described conversational answers, access to timely information and image generation directly in chats.
In April 2025, Meta launched the first standalone Meta AI app, extending the assistant beyond its existing in-app placements. That release added a Discover feed and connected the app with the web experience and Meta's AI-glasses companion functions.
Meta AI is a conversational assistant available through Meta's messaging and social apps, its website and a standalone app. Its web interface offers chat and image generation, while Meta also describes voice interaction in the app.
The standalone app adds a Discover feed where people can explore shared prompts. Meta says users choose whether to post to that feed, making public sharing an optional part of an assistant that also supports private conversations.
