Monumental differentiates itself by doing the work on the physical site with robots it builds itself, arguing that construction must be fixed on site where the end product is rather than automated off site through prefabricated and modular components. The company built a vertically integrated product of its own robot hardware, software, and machine vision pipeline, and its electric, autonomous robots use sensors, computer vision, and small cranes to lay brick and mortar to millimeter precision, driven by its AI software platform.
Monumental is paid for finished wall, which takes the financial and technical risk of owning and running the robots off the table, and contractors hire the company, whose robots are in use with customers on real construction sites across the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Monumental was started on the idea that high-quality housing should stay affordable as skilled labor becomes harder to find.
