The Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency releases a draft solicitation for a 10-year, $151 billion SHIELD contract to buy technology for the Golden Dome missile-defense system. Early-stage startups face security and compliance hurdles that may push them toward subcontracting with defense primes, while qualifying for the contract vehicle does not guarantee federal work. A consultant estimates non-traditional vendors could receive 5% to 10% of the contract’s value, largely through teaming arrangements.

Castelion is raising a $350 million Series B led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Altimeter Capital, at a valuation in the billions. The round follows a $100 million Series A that closed in January, and a signed term sheet is expected to close within weeks. Vatn Systems raises a $13 million seed round to develop autonomous underwater vehicles for defense uses. The Portsmouth, Rhode Island-based startup’s first prototype weighs about 50 pounds, operates in the top 300 meters of water, and can carry weapons or relay messages between ships; the round brings its total funding to $16.5 million. Investors include lead investor DYNE Ventures, Lockheed Martin Ventures, RTX Ventures, and In-Q-Tel.
