Introducing Simulator GIC: an innovative new tool for analyzing the potential impact of geomagnetically induced current (GIC) on power systems, using Simulator’s familiar power flow and transient stability platform.
PowerWorld Simulator 17 has been released! New features include web-based help documentation that is continuously updated, available Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC) analysis add-on, Distributed Flexible AC Transmission System (D-FACTS) device modeling, and transient stability support for line relay models.
If any of you are looking for a short course focused on electric grid impacts of geomagnetic disturbances, including the modeling needed for NERC TPL-007, we wanted to let you know that one will be offered by Texas A&M in College Station Texas on April 23 to 24. The instructors for this course are PowerWorld co-founder Tom Overbye, Tracy Rolstad (Avista), Jenn Gannon (CPI), Bob Arritt (ERPI), and Komal Shetye (TAMU). While not a PowerWorld training course, this course will make use of PowerWorld
These two videos show the frequency response of our 10K synthetic grid to a large generator fault. The first shows the total frequency response, whereas the second one just shows a single mode (0.73 Hz). With new Simulator capabilities, doing this detailed modal analysis is now quite easy. Because this is based on a synthetic grid, the underlying models are freely available. Simulator can do the same sort of analysis with actual grid models.
If any of you are looking for a short course focused on transmission system planning utilizing PowerWorld software, we wanted to let you know that one will be offered by Texas A&M in College Station Texas on March 19 to 21. The instructors for this course are PowerWorld co-founder Tom Overbye, PowerWorld superuser Tracy Rolstad and Jose Conto from ERCOT. While not a PowerWorld training course, this course will make use of PowerWorld Simulator to demonstrate many of the concepts associated with p
Researchers at Texas A&M University have released the following video showing the frequency of a synthetic power system oscillating over time. The video was created using PowerWorld Simulator and a synthetic power system case, including synthetic transient models. The case contains no CEII data and may be used by industry participants and researchers to model system dynamics or do other analysis in Simulator.
Professor Thomas Overbye was elected to the prestigious U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in February 2013. Only 69 new members were elected in 2013, including only four in the area of Electric Power and Energy Systems Engineering. The academy confers membership to those who have made “outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature, and to the pioneering of new and developin

Our wide range of products provide the tools needed by transmission planners, power marketers, system operators, educators, and anyone else desiring access to power system information and analysis in a user-friendly format. Our power system visualizations, interactive displays, and powerful presentation tools can assist your organization with needs ranging from internal presentation and in-house education to marketing to customers and preparing for regulatory hearings.
The seeds of PowerWorld Simulator were planted in the early 1990s, when Professor Thomas Overbye of the University of Illinois saw the need for a better tool to help students understand the workings of large-scale power systems. The software of the day relied heavily on numbers and charts that required further interpretation and explanation. Missing was a visual experience that could be easily understood.
PowerWorld Corporation maintains partnerships with other leading providers to the energy industry to enhance the customer experience through integrated solutions and extended product offerings.
We will host several online user group sessions or webinars focused on new features or improvements made with Simulator version 24. The sessions are open and free of charge, but separate registration is required for each. Recordings and slides from past sessions are available here.
