DRS IT System - Research Notes

  • Sensoneo states that it is the only company operating IT systems for deposit return schemes in nine countries, with recycling performance above 90 percent. DRS IT System combines scheme registration, clearing, reporting and reverse-vending-machine integration in one configurable platform rather than separate point systems.

Slovakia's scheme went live on the system on 1 January 2022 and reports a collection rate above 90 percent. Austria's operator EWP describes Sensoneo as a central software vendor covering almost all stakeholder and deposit processes in the country.

  • Sensoneo's DRS IT System was first implemented for Slovakia's deposit return scheme, which went live on 1 January 2022 after a build of about six months from a March 2021 supplier tender. Malta's scheme followed in November 2022 as the first in the Mediterranean.

Sensoneo later supplied deposit return scheme IT for Hungary, Ireland, Austria, Poland, Portugal and Romania. The company describes the accumulated experience as a configurable framework refined across nine national programmes.

  • European deposit return coverage keeps expanding as countries implement schemes to meet packaging recycling obligations. Sensoneo's DRS IT platform supports schemes at launch and then through long-term operation as return volumes scale.

First-party milestones include Austria's scheme going live on 1 January 2025 and Portugal's system launching on 10 April 2026. Sensoneo also names deployed schemes in Ireland, Slovakia, Malta, Hungary, Romania and Poland.

  • DRS IT System is Sensoneo's end-to-end software platform for operating national deposit return schemes. It connects producers, importers, retailers, collection points, logistics partners, scheme operators and consumers in one system, covering registration, clearing, refunds, reporting and fraud control.

Deployment modules span a core scheme system, producer and importer portals, retailer tools, clearing, financial ERP and accounting functions, interfaces to reverse vending machines, budgeting, and Power BI reporting. The platform is configured per scheme and supports centralised, hybrid and decentralised DRS operating models.
