Smart Waste Sensors are Sensoneo's ultrasonic and radar fill-level sensors for waste containers of any type.
The sensor line turns collection into a data-driven operation: containers report fill level in real time, so crews collect only full bins and routes shrink to actual demand. Mounting needs no technical expertise, batteries are replaceable in the field, and the ultrasonic models carry IP69 casing with IK10 impact protection for outdoor and industrial service.
Network choice stays with the customer, so the same hardware runs on Sigfox, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, CAT-M1, or GPRS, and an accelerometer-based tilt algorithm recognizes pickups for service verification. In Berg Insight's 2024 market analysis Sensoneo ranked among the top ten smart waste sensor technology vendors worldwide by installed base.
Sensoneo installed its first bin fill-level sensors in Nitra, Slovakia, in the summer of 2014, which the company's retrospective marks as the introduction of its smart waste sensor offering and which made the city a pioneer in data-driven waste collection. By 2024 the monitored installation in Nitra had grown to 440 semi-underground bins.
The sensor line matured through successive generations: the Quatro multi-beam model has been offered since 2018, Single Sensor 3.0 since 2019, and Single Sensor 5.0 with firmware-over-the-air updates and GNSS positioning since 2022. Each generation kept field-serviceable mounting and replaceable batteries while adding range, connectivity options, and pickup recognition.
Berg Insight counted 1.25 million waste collection points fitted with smart waste sensor technology worldwide in 2023, excluding China, and projects the installed base to reach 3.50 million by 2028 at a compound annual growth rate of 22.8 percent. Europe holds about 45 percent of the installed base, North America reached 470,000 units in 2023, and cellular technologies carry more than 80 percent of connected collection points.
Consolidation already shapes the market: RoadRunner's late-2022 acquisition of Compology made it the largest holder of installed sensors with a 16 percent share, and the top ten vendors together hold more than 53 percent. The sunsetting of 2G and 3G networks adds replacement shipments on top of new demand in the years ahead.
Sensoneo sells the sensor hardware directly through its own website with a guided five-step order process covering sensor selection, delivery, activation, installation, and platform monitoring, and supports buyers with product demos on request. Sensor data is consumed through the Waste Management System platform, which the company hosts on Microsoft Azure as a cloud subscription alongside the hardware.
A self-serve cost-reduction calculator on the product pages lets buyers estimate financial return and resource optimization before purchase, and a partner network of resellers extends distribution into regional markets. In Berg Insight's 2024 analysis the vendor landscape concentrated around managed-service providers and brokers that pair proprietary sensors with collection services, a segment Sensoneo competes in from the hardware and platform side.
Smart Waste Sensors are Sensoneo's hardware line of fill-level sensors for waste bins, dumpsters, and containers of any type. The line pairs ultrasonic sensors with radar measurement for liquid and hard-to-monitor assets, and fits street bins, communal containers, and industrial installations without replacing the container.
Every model reports fill level over IoT networks such as Sigfox, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and CAT-M1, or GPRS where no IoT network coverage exists, and sends data in real time to Sensoneo's Waste Management System platform. The sensors are designed and manufactured in-house in the EU, and their deployments include 11,100 sensors across Madrid, recorded as the largest smart waste installation worldwide.
