State Mutual Insurance, a mutual life-and-health insurer, sells supplemental policies in rural America covering standard medical-plan gaps.
State Mutual Insurance is a mutual life and health insurer that sells supplemental policies to protect customers from gaps in health insurance. A special act of the Georgia State Legislature granted 113 local citizens temporary licenses to act as insurance agents, and those agents’ sales of new life insurance policies formed the foundation for State Mutual Insurance Company. Over about five years, State Mutual purchased and absorbed six other life insurance companies, most of them mutual insurers.
During the 1990s, State Mutual began offering insurance products to the senior market and developed life insurance and Medicare Supplement products for older Americans. Today, it specializes in helping customers in traditionally underserved rural markets with supplemental policies for accident protection, cancer, heart attack and stroke, chronic disease, and hospital confinement; it primarily serves seniors in rural and small-town communities.
