Chinese mRNA vaccine developer whose lipid-nanoparticle platform advanced COVID-19 and personalized cancer vaccines; it shut down under court-ordered bankruptcy liquidation.
Stemirna was a Shanghai messenger-RNA company that had developed its own lipid-nanoparticle delivery technology, known as LPP, and built vaccine and tumour-drug programmes on top of it. Much of the value attributed to the business sat in the mRNA patents covering that delivery system and those programmes.
It was grouped with China's leading mRNA developers and called the country's Moderna, but its candidates moved through trials without generating sales, and its overseas approval produced no commercial launch. A cash-flow crisis, a boardroom split and mounting debts ended that run: operations stopped, staffing collapsed, and in September 2024 a Shanghai court opened bankruptcy-liquidation proceedings, with its patents and equipment later offered as one auction lot that drew no buyer.
