Universal Robots, based in Odense, Denmark, introduced the first commercially successful lightweight collaborative robot in late 2008, helping establish the cobot category for industrial automation. The company designs and manufactures six-axis collaborative robot arms together with the controllers, software and service programs used to deploy them.

Universal Robots has been part of Teradyne's robotics operations since the company's 2015 acquisition, alongside sister business Mobile Industrial Robots. It sells through a global network of distributors and system integrators, with cobots used in assembly, pick-and-place, machine tending, welding and palletizing across manufacturing industries.
