Virgin Hyperloop, a US transportation technology company, developed high-speed Hyperloop vacuum-tube transit technology before ceasing operations on December 31, 2023.
Virgin Hyperloop was an American transportation technology company founded on June 1, 2014 to commercialize the Hyperloop concept, a high-speed variant of the vacuum train. It built a 500-meter DevLoop test track in North Las Vegas and conducted the first crewed Hyperloop passenger test on November 8, 2020, reaching 107 miles per hour (172 km/h).
After laying off about half of its staff in February 2022 and pivoting to freight, the company dropped the Virgin name and reverted to Hyperloop One in November 2022. It ceased operations on December 31, 2023 after failing to win a contract to build a working system, and sold its remaining assets, with its intellectual property transferring to majority stakeholder DP World.
