Wanda Fish competes in cultivated seafood by targeting whole-cut tuna rather than minced or purely plant-based analogues. Its GMO-free platform induces native fat formation in bluefin tuna cells, which is what preserves the buttery texture of toro, the cut that commands the highest tuna prices.
Its licence to Tufts University fish-cell cultivation intellectual property and its sponsored research agreement give it a research position few cultivated-seafood peers hold, and cultivating fillets in controlled conditions offers food-safety and supply-consistency advantages over wild-caught and farmed tuna.

The nearest-term driver is regulatory approval. Wanda Fish said in May 2024 that it planned to file cultivated-seafood regulatory dossiers in 2025, the milestone that would move its bluefin tuna toro from prototype toward commercial sale.
Production scale is the second driver. The company raised its $7 million seed round explicitly to accelerate pilot production of cultivated bluefin tuna, so progress on pilot capacity is the operational indicator that would support a commercial launch.

The main risk is timing. As of the May 2024 toro prototype unveiling Wanda Fish had no approved product, and its own plan put regulatory filings in 2025, so any approval delay pushes out revenue from its only near-market offering.
Cultivation is also capital-intensive. The only raise it has disclosed is the 2023 seed round, so a funding gap would slow the pilot scale-up that a commercial launch depends on, and concentrating on one premium species leaves little diversification if that market shifts.

Wanda Fish's value capture rests on selling toro, the highest-priced tuna cut, at a cultivation cost below wild-caught and farmed bluefin, so that spread rather than volume decides whether the model works. No cost-per-kilogram figure has been published, leaving the comparison against those alternatives unproven.
The disclosed financial base is narrow: one $7 million seed round against a capital-intensive cultivation and pilot-manufacturing build, with no published gross margin or retention data. The decisive denominators for its unit economics therefore remain missing rather than merely weak.
