Born in Thailand and raised in Malaysia, he completed graduate studies at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering. Inspired by the Fukushima nuclear accident, he pursued research in nuclear science. While a student, he was the first in Japan to develop an accelerator mass spectrometry system for measuring uranium isotope ratios, and worked on a range of applied research projects

He completed the doctoral program at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering. After serving as an assistant professor and associate professor at Tohoku University, he took up his current position in September 2003. His specialties are quantum physics, quantum computers, and quantum simulators. He received the Japan Academy Medal in 2007 and the American Physical Society’s ... in 2009

He conducted pioneering research in France on controlling single laser-cooled neutral atoms, establishing foundational technologies essential to neutral-atom quantum computers and quantum simulators. In 2019, he began developing neutral-atom quantum computers at the Institute for Molecular Science

He earned his PhD at Kyoto University, specializing in experimental research on quantum many-body physics using laser-cooled neutral atoms. In 2019, he began developing neutral-atom quantum computers at the Institute for Molecular Science. Since then, he has continued to conduct advanced research as one of Japan’s leading young researchers
