Zenith Electronics LLC licenses Pro:Idiom, an encryption technology used in the hospitality industry for digital television signals.
Building on nearly 100 years of innovation leadership, today’s Zenith develops core technologies that enable content security, robust transmission and future broadcast standards.
Superstorm Sandy, wildfires, tornadoes, and earthquakes – these and other natural and man-made disasters reveal time and again the need for a reliable, geo-targeted, information-rich alerting system for a mobile, 21st Century America.
Zenith developed hearing aid technology from the 1930s to 1970s and introduced analog TVs with closed captions in 1992, HDTVs with digital closed captions in 1999, and converter boxes with digital captions and video descriptions for the blind in 2008.
Zenith has pioneered electronics technology for 95 years, including the first wireless TV remote controls, portable radios, push-button radios, stereo audio systems for FM radio and television, and terrestrial HDTV broadcast systems using digital technology.
Zenith honored its founder-president, Commander Eugene F. McDonald, Jr., inventor of shortwave radio and subscription television; Dr. Robert Adler, creator of the TV remote control; and Carl Eilers, co-inventor of Stereo FM and Stereo TV standards.
Channel surfing was born more than six decades ago. The first TV remote control, called the “Lazy Bones,” was developed in 1950 by Zenith (then known as Zenith Radio Corporation and now a wholly owned subsidiary of LG Electronics USA).

The sale marked the end of Zenith’s independent production of televisions, removing its products from households nationwide. The brand’s legacy as an electronics pioneer faded following the transition.
