Harness acquires Augment Code to bridge software engineering from idea to deployment

Harness acquires Augment Code to bridge software engineering from idea to deployment

Harness acquires Augment Code to bridge software engineering from idea to deployment

Autonomous software delivery lifecycle platform Harness Inc. today announced that it has acquired select assets from Augment Code Computing Inc. and the company’s team will join the company.

Harness is a software delivery company that provides an autonomous, artificial intelligence-driven platform to assist developers and operations teams, or DevOps, with the software delivery lifecycle. It automates building, testing and deploying code across cloud, container and on-premises environments with AI agents that help generate workflows from plain text to catch vulnerabilities, test code and troubleshoot production issues.

As part of the acquisition, Harness is receiving Cosmos, Augment Code’s cloud-based AI code development platform that coordinates multiple agents for software engineering teams. Other assets being brought over will include Auggie command-line interface products, the Code Context Engine and related technologies. Cosmos will become Harness Cosmos Software Factory and take on a clear role: Automate engineering work from idea to code.

“Right now, turning an idea into code and taking that code to production are two separate jobs, and someone has to manually steer every step in between,” Harness co-founder and Chief Executive Jyoti Bansal told SiliconANGLE. “At Harness, we’ve spent years helping major enterprises get code safely to production. Augment Code has spent years getting from an idea to good code.”

Developers can use Cosmos to prompt and coordinate AI agents to generate and maintain code at scale using natural language prompts. This is where developers sit down at the keyboard and work on the code itself, producing and refining the engineering work central to their craft.

From there, Harness’s existing agents for software delivery, security testing, runtime protection and cost management take over and handle everything within the DevOps pipeline from work to production. The company said this will create the “idea to deployment” agent-to-agent experience.

Bansal said after the acquisition the only thing that will change is opportunity: “Our customers will get a choice. They can keep using their preferred coding tools, adopt Harness Cosmos, or use both.”

What’s new is that code assistance, generation and maintenance now share context, he added. From the perspective of engineers, this means that testing and security don’t simply sit on a separate dashboard; they’re inside of the work.

“We set out to bring AI to the entire software development lifecycle, starting with context-aware coding,” said Augment Code co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Igor Ostrovsky. “Joining Harness is the next step toward that vision. Together, we can make engineering work increasingly automatic, with engineers stepping in only where judgment really matters.”
