CFP Board traces its origins to the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners, an independent certifying body established through an agreement with the College for Financial Planning that received ownership of the CFP® marks, and was later renamed Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. It comprises two affiliated organizations, the Center for Financial Planning and CFP Board of Standards, and sets and enforces the requirements for CFP® certification across education, examination, experience, and ethics.
Individuals who complete its initial and ongoing certification requirements are authorized to use the CFP® marks in the United States, where CFP Board administers the program's examination and ethics enforcement. Responsibility for administering the certification outside the United States sits with the separate Financial Planning Standards Board, and consumers can locate credentialed planners through CFP Board's Let's Make a Plan site.
