The United Nations works with Google to make its global statistics easier for AI systems to access and use through the UN System Data Commons. Built on Google’s open-source Data Commons, the platform replaces UNData, supports natural-language searches and Model Context Protocol connections, and links statistics to their original sources. Twenty-six UN entities have committed, with data from nearly 20 available at launch; the UN aims to bring 80% of its statistical datasets onto the platform by 2027.
Google.org commits $20 million in cash and $2 million in cloud credits to help academic and nonprofit researchers worldwide use AI to pursue scientific breakthroughs. The initiative supports work applying AI to complex problems across disciplines, with potential areas including rare and neglected diseases, experimental biology, materials science and sustainability. Google expects to select recipients and distribute the funding by 2026, likely among no more than around 15 organizations.
