Natcast began as SemiUS, the new nonprofit the Department of Commerce named as the expected operator of the National Semiconductor Technology Center, and took its current name to reflect its activities and focus. It went on to launch jump start R&D programs, a Workforce Center of Excellence, and an NSTC membership program. Its work sat inside a consortium that convened the U.S. government with organizations across the semiconductor ecosystem.
The center Natcast operated assembles companies, academia and U.S. government agencies from across the semiconductor industry to collaborate on barriers in new technologies and on the need for a skilled workforce. Operational responsibility for the center was later removed from Natcast and shifted to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
