Gemini CLI is Google's open-source AI agent that brings Gemini into the terminal for coding, debugging, and workflow automation.
Gemini CLI is an open-source terminal AI agent developed by Google. It lets developers query and edit codebases, generate applications from images or PDFs, debug issues, and automate operational tasks using natural language. The tool provides built-in Google Search grounding, file-system and shell tools, MCP server support for custom extensions, and non-interactive scripting modes.
The project is available under the Apache 2.0 license and can be installed via npm, Homebrew, or MacPorts. Individuals can sign in with a personal Google account for a free tier, while professional users can authenticate with a Google AI Studio or Vertex AI key; users with a Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise license retain access. Google announced in June 2025 that the free individual tier and Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions would stop serving unpaid users after June 18, 2026, directing them to Antigravity CLI.
