BNSF Railway is the principal operating subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the company operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America with approximately 32,500 route miles across 28 states and three Canadian provinces.
Formed by the 1995 merger of the Burlington Northern and Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railways, BNSF employs over 36,000 people and moves a diverse mix of consumer goods, agricultural products, industrial equipment, and energy resources. The railroad is led by President and CEO Kathryn Farmer.
