Chery Jaguar Land Rover sits between its two parents: a 50:50 independent joint venture established in November 2012 between Chery Automobile and Jaguar Land Rover, which would cease to produce before the end of 2026 after losing $18.7 million in the 2024 fiscal year, while parent Chery fields the Jaecoo 7 midsize SUV under its premium off-road Jaecoo brand in January priced from just £29,435 ($37,303), undercutting Land Rover's own direct competitor, the Range Rover Evoque, by nearly £11,000 ($13,940).
Chery Jaguar Land Rover's long-time commercial collaborator, Chinese auto giant Chery, is about to field a direct competitor to Jaguar Land Rover's products in the U.K. In June 2024 JLR and Chery signed a Letter of Intent to license the Freelander brand to CJLR for creation of electric vehicles in China. JLR's CEO said the company has no intention of blocking Chery if it ships Freelanders to British and European buyers, even though those cars would land in roughly the same segment as the Discovery and Defender.
