Enwave Green Heat supplies low-carbon hot-water heating to buildings connected to Toronto’s district energy network.
Enwave Green Heat is a district heating program that supplies low-carbon thermal energy to connected buildings in downtown Toronto. Its Pearl Street plant uses an electric heat pump to upgrade recovered heat from district cooling customers into hot water for other network customers. The program launched in 2023, and Enwave commissioned the new plant in September 2025.
The shared system serves building owners seeking heating without separate onsite generation. Enwave identifies commercial, institutional and residential customers as buyers of the program. The plant’s design allows it to reduce electricity demand during peak periods while continuing thermal service, and its recovered-heat approach links heating demand with cooling loads from hospitals, data centers and research facilities.
