Android smartphone with a titanium frame, ceramic back, and edge-to-edge display, launched in 2017 and discontinued in 2020.
The Essential Phone (model PH-1) was announced on May 30, 2017 and reached customers in the United States and Canada starting August 25, 2017. It featured a 5.71-inch edge-to-edge display, a titanium frame with a ceramic back, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and a dual 13-megapixel rear camera pairing color and monochrome sensors. The phone ran Android and carried a magnetic connector for snap-on accessories, including a 360-degree camera and a charging dock.
It launched at $699 unlocked and was sold through Essential's own online shop as well as Sprint in the United States and Telus in Canada, with the direct price later cut to $499. A planned second-generation phone was cancelled in May 2018, and the Project GEM successor announced in October 2019 was cancelled when the company ceased operations on February 12, 2020. The phone received its final software update on February 3, 2020.
