Hexafly operates a zero-waste production process in which every part of the insect is converted into a usable product. The company's larvae grow rapidly and efficiently on food industry waste, producing a protein profile that the company reports is comparable to meat.
The business is headquartered in Ireland, giving it access to European aquaculture and agriculture markets, and it has built partnerships with research institutions including Maynooth University and Trinity College Dublin.
The global demand for alternative proteins and sustainable animal feed is growing as regulators and buyers seek to reduce reliance on fishmeal and soya. Hexafly targets aquaculture, pet food, poultry and plant nutrition markets where insect-derived ingredients can replace conventional inputs.
The company has reported plans to scale production to 10,000 tons of insect protein annually and expand into additional geographies, subject to regulatory approvals and funding.
Hexafly produces insect-derived ingredients by farming black soldier fly larvae on organic waste streams. Its product range includes Hexameal protein meal for aquaculture and pet food, Hexaoil lauric acid-rich oil for animal feed and oleochemicals, Hexafrass organic fertilizer, and Hexagrubs feed for birds, reptiles and fish.
The ingredients are positioned as sustainable alternatives to fishmeal, soymeal and chemical fertilizers, with the aim of lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing land and ocean use.
