Karius Focus BAL is a laboratory-developed test performed in a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited laboratory using 1 mL of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. It sequences microbial cell-free DNA against a curated pathogen database covering 500+ lung-associated pathogens across bacteria, fungi, molds and DNA viruses, categorizing obligate, opportunistic and flora signals, typically reporting the next day after sample receipt.
It is designed to identify pneumonia etiology and improve diagnostic yield over standard BAL testing, especially in immunocompromised patients.
